Thai architecture is unique in that it blends traditional rural architectural styles with new developments. Thai architecture is a reflection of the traditional styles of its Asian neighbors and slowly evolves into a distinct modern style that was initially developed by the nation. The unique Thai architectural style was first developed in the 19th century. It is comprised of simple, rounded structures supported by pavilions and terraces that are connected with waterways. Many monuments and structures from this time are still in existence.

The influence of Rome can be seen in Phra’s palaces which are dated to 100 B.C. Other architectural styles are Thai-inspired like longhouses and Koala, which are inspired by the pre-classical architecture of China. Modernity wasn’t introduced to Thailand until the 20th Century and it was at this point that Bangkok became one of the most modern cities in the world. Nakhon architecture is based on traditional royal Thai elements of geometrical patterns that include the semicircle, the compass rose, and the circular tree. It also incorporates elements from China, like the tiger and rooster dragon, compass rose and the dragon. Many buildings in Nakhon were converted into shrines and temples that reflect the rich background of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Modern Thai architecture is based upon the classical forms, but it is modernized by modernist principles. Many examples of contemporary Thai architecture can be found in the Nakhon region. The Elephant Tower, constructed in 1963, provides an amazing view from the outside. The Ang Thong National Park is an attraction that is popular close to the Elephant Tower. It has an extensive collection of tropical plants and is the only one in Phuket.

The minimalist hotels are among the most striking aspects of contemporary architecture in Phuket. They are just a short distance from the Ang Thong National Park, these arched-roofed structures make use of straight lines and geometric shapes and incorporate modern features, such as skylights, to create a distinctive look. The Bophut Hotel is another example of a structure located in Phuket that uses simple geometric forms. It is situated at the top of a hill and is also punctuated by a tower. It was constructed in the same time period. The Khmer Orang Asana temple, located near Ang Thong, is another lesser-known Buddhist temple.

While most visitors to Phuket are drawn by the island’s natural beauty, it is worth noting Phuket also has a variety of architecture for those who are interested in more specific aspects. Visitors may find that one of the best ways to explore the island is to partake in a guided tour to one or more of the temples that are located in the area. This allows tourists to not only enjoy the beautiful views of Phuket and the surrounding area, but also show respect for the Thai people.
